Previously known as 2RN & 6CK; Radio Athlone; Radio Éireann.
RTÉ Radio 1 launched in Dublin as 2RN in 1926. In 1927 a sister station, 6CK, was added from Cork. In 1933 they joined and became known as Radio Athlone when a new high-powered transmitter was launched from the Westmeath town. In 1938 the station became known as Radio Éireann. At that stage the station ran under the auspices of the Department of Posts and Telgraphs, in effect the government. In 1960 it was granted its own authority. Medium wave transmissions ceased altogether on March 24th 2008. |
