Mighty Mac, authored by Michael O’Kane and directed by Liam O'Brien, with sound supervision by Philip Cooke, has won in the Radio Documentary category at this year’s Prix Europa. The RTÉ Radio 1 feature took the Special Prix Europa Award.

The documentary follows master upholsterer and world champion power-lifter Ger MacNamara as he embarks on two challenges; firstly, to repair a rare and collapsed 18th century 'Bellamy' couch and, secondly, in the same period, an attempt to break a world power-lifting record.

The Prix Europa has become the most important festival of its kind since being founded in 1987 by the European Cultural Foundation and the Council of Europe. The competition aims to promote the trademark "Made in Europe" and to reflect the complete spectrum of European productions, to show cross-border programme developments and to be a forum for quality programmes.

The award comes on foot of RTÉ Radio’s success at this year’s PPI radio awards.
