Radio Nova seeks to share offices with 4FM after launch
24th January 2010
By Samantha McCaughren
Radio Nova, a new Dublin rock station that is due to launch later this year, is seeking to share offices with 4FM, the multi-city station which started last year. It is understood that Radio Nova will launch in mid-summer after initially planning to launch in August last year. Its backers include radio veteran Dermot Hanrahan and Des Whelan, who is chief executive of Waterford station WLR. Sources said that Nova was hoping to share 4FM’s premises in a bid to keep costs down. A growing number of radio stations are now sharing facilities, although under their agreements with the regulator, many functions must remain separate. Investors in 4FM include Hanrahan, the Irish Times and Thomas Crosbie Holdings. Nova is likely to be the last station launch for some time as the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has indefinitely deferred plans to advertise for new regional country music stations. It is unlikely there would be as much interest in new radio licences as in the past. Radio ad revenues fell by about 25 per cent last year. However, the licence for Dublin’s Country Mix will be advertised later this year. In general, radio licences are issued for ten years. East Coast Radio owns Dublin’s Country Mix. Chief executive of Dublin’s Country Mix, Sean Ashmore, said that they were "absolutely" applying for the licence again. When a licence comes up for renewal, other interested parties can apply and the existing operator may lose out. Ashmore said the station was "in or around" breakeven at the moment and its position had been helped greatly by sharing costs with East Coast Radio. Dublin’s Country Mix has also just signed a new agreement on ad sales with Independent Radio Sales. |
